Things I Have Learned This Week

Things I have learned this week……

Contact Lenses make me a better person

Added to the list of things that I didn’t know before, is the fact that you can’t roll your eyes at people when you’re wearing contact lenses.

Having only recently started a trial wearing of them, I had no idea that rolling my eyes at one of Simon’s many ‘hilarious’ jokes would result in feeling a little bit like someone had just stabbed a small stick under my eyelid.

Since I can’t roll my eyes, I look like I’m a nicer person at least…. I may have to resist the urge to substitute eye rolling for sarcastic clapping just to keep up the facade. Annoyingly though he is actually funny a lot of the time, just don’t tell him that!

Sunburn is the gift that keeps on giving

Yes at the grand age of 33, I should be beyond the point of being silly enough to get sunburnt. In my defence this was the first time in a very long time and it was mostly because we went on a two-hour boat trip around Falmouth and the Helford River.

Not only has my back been so painful that it has woken me at night every time I accidentally rolled over, but my bra became an instrument of torture all week. I tried to adjust the straps to give me some relief on my shoulders.

All I managed to do was ping the strap against the worst part of my sunburn and possibly teach my children a few new swear words. I am winning at life this week!

As painful as my back was…. it has taken four days to not be agonising… it was so worth it for that boat trip.

Boat on a sunny day near St Mawes Castle Cornwall

Don’t Facebook Live stream when it’s so bright you can’t see the screen

Whilst we were on the boat trip, I decided to be clever and do a bit of Facebook Live for the first time ever, For those of you who haven’t seen or heard of it, it is basically where you film a short video but people can see it live on Facebook whilst you film it.

To me this is asking for trouble for drunk people ha. I wasn’t drunk on the boat, but it was so bright I couldn’t see my screen much, so I cleverly streamed a nice blurry video to everyone. In fact two blurry videos.

You actually CAN over cook pasta

Just when I thought my culinary skills could not get any worse, I managed to over cook what must be the easiest thing in the world to cook. All I had to do was cook some pasta on the hob. I however got distracted and ended up cooking and attempting to eat, what can only really be described as chew-able water.

Maybe I should patent that, a very clever if slightly disgusting invention. I would have taken a photo to show you, but in truth it looked a whole lot like a tape worm…. and no one needs to see that.

My cooking has improved over the years though, it has been more than 5 years now since I last gave anyone food poisoning, I think I should get a certificate for that.

Have you learned anything this week, or made any epic fails you’d like to own up to?!

Things I have learnt this week

    1. Having someone stand on your foot whilst wearing stilettos is incredibly painful.
    2. Life is always ready to pack you a punch when you are down.
    3. No matter how little or how much money you have, nothing is worth as much as a cuddle from your children.

  3. 22 July 2016 / 7:45 am

You need to ask Simon to stop making hilarious joke so that you have no more problems with your contact lenses LOL. Lovely pic as usual! I go on holiday every time I read one of your posts. #PicknMix

I’m with you on the sunburn pain !! I found myself making sure my daughter was ok and forgot about myself #picknmix

I went to have my eyes tested last week and they did suggest I would be able to have contacts if I want. I’m not sure I could stick my fingers in my eyes though!
    #picknmix

    • 22 July 2016 / 8:55 am

Ha I felt the same a bit, but it’s mind over matter as really your finger doesn’t touch your eye only the contact ;)

  7. 22 July 2016 / 8:59 am

I have to say, once you get used to your contacts a bit more the eye rolling becomes a bit easier! #picknmix

You are probably in the majority with being sunburnt this week! Don’t worry about the pasta I can overcook chips!

The Facebook one reminded of an incident I had this week; just getting changed from the paddling pool and my phone rang FaceTime call from the in laws on holiday; I very very nearly pressed answer – luckily I realised just in time that I had literally not a stitch on! #picknmix x

  8. 22 July 2016 / 9:28 am

Haha the contact lenses one made me laugh, I think I should probably start wearing contacts again! Oh and I’m always getting sunburnt, I remember to put suncream on the kids but never myself x #picknmix

  9. 22 July 2016 / 9:55 am

Haha this is really good! I also suffered sun burn this week just because i am a red head and sat in the sun for 20 minutes. i will never learn! #picknmix

    • 22 July 2016 / 10:06 am

Maybe in another 33 years I’ll have more sense?! I should probably have been a redhead, I am so pale naturally.

The boat trip looks amazing, they’ve a facebook offer on for £5pp instead of £10pp but I’ve only got my OHs work Facebook account so can’t comment using that lol. I’d need to know if there’s age limits for littlies & how much it would be for them. We have all 5 kids tomorrow so would give us something to do.

  11. 22 July 2016 / 10:11 am

I Love This. What I Learned This Week – we should all do this on a regular basis. What contact lenses are you using? I use daily disposables and my eye rolling has never been affected, thank God! Love this post. x #picknmix

  12. 22 July 2016 / 10:54 am

Haha great post! I do know someone who burnt spaghetti and subsequently set it on fire though – yours seems tame in comparison! #picknmix

  13. 22 July 2016 / 11:03 am

You made me remember the first time I wore contact lens! It took me hours and a lot of tears and frustration just to get in in my eye! Thanks for sharing =) #picknmix

I burnt spaghetti hoops this other day, bad eh!! And sunburn, I’m terrible for that. My son is always lathered up but I always forget about me – sat here now with a bright pink nose! #picknmix

    • 22 July 2016 / 1:05 pm

You’ve made me feel better about the pasta ;) although apparently more concerning was the raw egg I ‘cooked’ for Si the other day…

      Stevie x

  15. 22 July 2016 / 12:22 pm

Hee hee every day’s a school day! Hope your sunburn has calmed down a bit now. This week I learned that it takes longer than you could imagine (and GALLONS of water) to fill an 8ft paddling pool, but it will be worth it to see the look on the kids faces X #picknmix

    • 22 July 2016 / 1:05 pm

Ha ha and mine have always made me add hot water to it as well in the vain hope of warming it up a teeny bit ;)

Great post! Sorry to hear about the sunburn, I’ve never had it but I imagine that it stings like hell!! The only epic fails I can share with you this week is ordering the ribs on a night out with friends. Food poisoning was not fun!! Bleurgh! #picknmix

    • 22 July 2016 / 5:34 pm

Oh no!! Luckily I have never had food poisoning… I did however give it to Si within a month of us dating. In my defence I have never claimed to be good at cooking ;) I hope you’re feeling better now lovely.

  17. 22 July 2016 / 8:55 pm

Ohh I love this post Stevie. Sorry to hear you got sunburnt, I’m glad the boat trip was worth the pain though. Chewable water sounds pretty gross bug congrats for not giving anyone food poisoning! xx #picknmix

  18. 23 July 2016 / 1:59 pm

Ha ha great post! I’ve done the sunburn thing once…couldn’t lie on my back for a week!

This week I have learnt that boob tape, as in the double sided sticky stuff that’s supposed to prevent wardrobe malfunction…yea, it doesn;t work!

    #picknmix

  19. 23 July 2016 / 5:46 pm

I never knew that about contact lenses, I really want some but I am such a wimp, I suppose I need to give them a try & then decide. Snap on the cooking skills, haha.

  20. 23 July 2016 / 7:05 pm

Never knew you could overcook pasta and yep never stop burning that sun loves to get his hands on you non stop :) X #picknmix

  21. 23 July 2016 / 10:06 pm

I learnt that my knowledge of first aid is in there somewhere. #PicknMix

  22. 24 July 2016 / 4:50 am

Great post Stevie. Contact lenses are a god send to me & I defiantly got the hang of eye rolling quite quickly when I have them in! Hope the sunburn gets better, I never learn & can guarantee a dose every summer!! #PicknMix

  23. 24 July 2016 / 9:39 am

Brilliant – and loving your new theme too, Pipdig is amazing! I often over-cook things while I am blogging and pasta is one of them. I usually put it on and then 10 minutes later, I think to myself, why do I smell burning toast? Ah no it’s not toast but just me burning another saucepan. Thanks for hosting #picknmix :) x

  24. 24 July 2016 / 10:41 am

I feel your pain with the sunburn! I did this when we went on the river in Windsor – so painful! I’ve yet to try Facebook Live but well done for attempting it.

Here’s to a better week next week! #PIcknMix

  25. 24 July 2016 / 3:09 pm

Heehee ah, you made me laugh!!! It’s been a busy time for you! I feel your pasta pain though as I too this week have over cooked my pasta! Must be the heatwave and westcountry vibes getting to us!! #picknmix

  26. 24 July 2016 / 10:59 pm

It sounds like some tough lessons have been learnt here. Sunburn sucks!

  27. 25 July 2016 / 1:18 pm

I wear contact lenses and I can roll my eyes! Maybe you need to practise! #picknmix

    • 25 July 2016 / 2:37 pm

Ha I think it is because for once my hayfever or my antihistamines have caused my eyes to be really dry, I’ve given up on contacts for a few days until they hopefully sort themselves out ;)

      Stevie x

  28. 25 July 2016 / 3:28 pm

lol yes you CAN overcook pasta! I did this last week making a simple pesto pasta. it was disgusting! ouch re sunburn too :/ not fun! #PicknMix

  29. 26 July 2016 / 8:19 pm

Haha loved reading this! I used to wear contact lenses but have since had laser – I definitely do not miss that feeling of grit in the eye. And now I can roll my eyes again! The boat trip sounds amazing, and I also often overcook pasta! x #picknmix

  30. 26 July 2016 / 9:33 pm

Love your new theme Stevie. I keep toying with the idea of a Pipdig theme as they look really fresh and current. Laughing at the pasta, I thought I would be adventurous the other week and make Risotto, surely it can’t be that hard. WRONG I totally undercooked it and it was like eating little bits of grit. Thankfully we all laughed at how awful it was and got a takeaway x

    • 26 July 2016 / 10:49 pm

Ha I have never even tasted risotto… it doesn’t look that great, but I may be proved wrong ;) and thanks lovely, the bit I love about Pipdig is that there are so many options you can change appearance wise, that all their blogs don’t need to look the same :)

      Stevie x

  31. 28 July 2016 / 8:13 pm

Haha I love this post! I burnt my back the other week too, not really bad but enough to be hot! I don’t know what I’d do if I couldn’t roll my eyes! Also James won’t let me cook certain meals as I always ruin them x

  32. 29 July 2016 / 7:11 am

Lol! I didn’t know you can stream live video on Facebook!! Sorry to hear about the sunburn, the picture looks stunning though And sounds fabulous! Thanks for hosting #picknmix xx

  33. 29 July 2016 / 10:56 pm

I love this post and you are actually hilarious! I can roll my eyes whilst wearing contact lenses – you just need more practice ;) x

  34. 8 August 2016 / 9:14 pm

I love how you can laugh at yourself Stevie… and ouch for the pinging bra strap on your sunburn! Thanks for hosting #picknmix
