Forty Before 40

Tomorrow I turn 33 and I have no issue with getting older at all, obviously it is better than the alternative for a start. For a bit of fun though I am going to do what I have seen others do online and set myself a 40 before Forty challenge.

Since I will have seven years to try and complete my list, I can choose ones that will take a fair bit of saving up for and/or hope to win the lottery for in the mean time ;) Anyway here goes my very long list of adventures and challenges for myself over the next seven years.

40 Before Forty

See the Northern Lights

Visit America and/or Canada – done! We were lucky enough to get to go to Universal Orlando Resort in 2017 in the USA!

Bake a cake that isn’t a disaster

Raise over £1000 for JDRF

Visit Scotland

Have a 100% finished house

See a famous band or singer live

Sleep in a hotel right by the beach, so I can see the sea from bed – done, we stayed at The Land’s End Hotel down here in Cornwall in 2017.

Be my ‘ideal’ weight even if only for a week

Own a pair of ankle boots which aren’t loud when walking or flat – done, I have a favourite pair that I pretty much live in.

Spend a Christmas in a cosy cottage with an open fire

Give blood

Take a ride in a helicopter

Find a hairdresser I trust and will visit more than once, who won’t dye my forehead

Go on a cruise

Swim in the sea in Cornwall again, I haven’t for years.

Go on a whale spotting boat trip – Done with Red Letter Days even if we didn’t see a lot it was still fun!

Sleep in a castle

Visit Wales

Visit all the main big beaches in Cornwall that I haven’t been to yet

Have a spa day

Visit Harry Potter World before the boys grow out of it – Done! We loved visiting Warner Studios!

Own a decent SLR camera –  Done, my lovely boyfriend and the boys bought me a Nikon D3300 for my birthday.

Eat a macaron, random but I’ve never tried one ha – Done, I tried one when we visited Universal Studios in the USA.

Stay in a yurt

Run for longer than 20 minutes in one go – Done just before I had to sell my treadmill.

Learn to put make-up on properly

Try abseiling

Walk to the top of Brown Willy – Done in 2018 – it almost killed me I was that unfit, so I want to try ti again without needing to sit down part way up!

Sleep in a tree-house or a cosy wooden lodge

Walk all of the South-West coast path (not in one go)

Make my own yorkshire puddings successfully

Drive a Tractor – Simon’s Dad is restoring an old one, I suspect he’ll be hiding the keys if he reads this.

Own a white Audi

Build a snowman again, we get snow very rarely down here – Done in 2018

Try paddleboarding

Visit St Nectan’s Glen

Take a photograph of a perfect sunset at Land’s End

Feed a penguin

Get contact lenses – Done! I don’t wear contacts all the time, but it is nice to now have the option to.

In case you think I’ve gone mad, Brown Willy is a hill that is the highest point in Cornwall! Contact lenses I would love as I have had to wear glasses all of the time for around a year now and I am so fed up of them needing cleaning and getting covered in rain.

Building a snowman would be great for the boys as we very rarely get snow in our part of Cornwall so they haven’t built a proper one since they were around three and four. The macaron bit is because I always see photos of them online and hear people talk about them, but weirdly I have never gotten around to trying one.

I would have put skydiving on my list, but I’ve done it before and absolutely loved every second of it. Now that I have children though I don’t take as many risks as I did before I had them all those years ago.

I’ll keep updating this list as and when I complete things on it, obviously some will be easy but some will take a lot of saving for!

What would be on your forty before 40 or fifty before 50 etc list?

Ha some great ones in there! I’m 37 this year so might do a list of my own. Look forward to seeing you tick off each one. PS macrons are overrated anyway

    • 3 May 2016 / 1:37 pm

Ha I expect they are, I just see photos of them everywhere and they look pretty but I’ve never eaten one – one of my most random list items! ;)

You could do a few in one go, walk the southwest coast, raise money for your charity and stay in hotels right on the beach and visit the beaches.

    :) awesome post lovely

  3. 15 April 2016 / 8:29 am

I love this idea and I love your list. There’s a few I might pinch if I put a list together.

What a fantastic list of things to achieve! I’d also love to see the Northern Lights :) #picknmix

  5. 15 April 2016 / 10:39 am

Happy Birthday! I started a 40 before 40 list recently (I only have 4 years to go!!) and I still haven’t achieved a single one of them! I love your list and I hope that you achieve all of these things! Good Luck! #picknmix

    • 15 April 2016 / 9:44 pm

Thank you :) I luckily have already achieved one of them today since my boyfriend and children gave me a SLR camera for my birthday ;) that was easy ha!

  6. 15 April 2016 / 11:23 am

Baaahahah I love this, a lot of these you could combine, like staying in a yurt in Wales (I follow a company that do just this, I’ll send you the link!) But I love the choices you have made. Sleeping seems to figure a lot. A woman after my own heart Before I had Oscar one of mine was to live and work in another country (and I don’t think Wales really counted). But now that might have to change. Oh and ps macaroons are over rated in my experience.

    • 15 April 2016 / 9:19 pm

Ha I do love sleep ;) it’s mostly our love of staycations and holidays in general! Definitely combining some of them, I was thinking the abseiling (gulp) could be sponsored for JDRF at some point too. I had a new SLR camera for my birthday so that’s one ticked off today already ;)

      Stevie x

  7. 15 April 2016 / 12:40 pm

Am I too late to start s list?! I’m 38 this year! I reckon you could knock off some of these quite soon Stevie! Sky diving will not be on my list EVER!! Good for you doing that already! I would love to go skiing again and return to the Maldives but probably not achievable in the next two years! X

    • 15 April 2016 / 9:01 pm

Definitely not too late to do one :) Just make sure you choose things you won’t need to save up for for lots of years ;) I did a sky dive for a children’s cancer charity and it was absolutely amazing, one of the best experiences of my life and I’m not a fan of going up ladders even ha!

  8. 15 April 2016 / 1:14 pm

One of my key ones is to own a chanel 2.55 bag and to stay in the Plaza Hotel in New York just off Central Park….I think hubby and I will have to work extra hard for either of those things to happen! Happy birthday, have a lovely one! #picknmix

    • 15 April 2016 / 9:45 pm

Thank you :) Wow I hope you get to achieve either of those dreams! :)

  10. 15 April 2016 / 3:08 pm

Fab list & Happy Birthday!!! I really need to make one and get on with ticking things off it! Have a go at the macarons but make them, they are really satifying when you get it right!

    • 15 April 2016 / 9:37 pm

Thank you, I can tick one off already as my boyfriend surprised me with an SLR camera this morning as my birthday present!

      Stevie x

  11. 15 April 2016 / 4:03 pm

Happy Birthday! I wish I was 33 again! Lots of these sound achievable – I couldn’t live without my contact lenses! #picknmix

    • 15 April 2016 / 5:54 pm

Thank you :) Contacts are definitely one of the ones I want to get sorted soon, steamed up glasses are awful!

      Stevie x

  12. 15 April 2016 / 5:47 pm

Great list and a few you’ll be able to tick off pretty quickly too I think… In fact, hasn’t one already been done thanks to your birthday present?? What a great start!

    • 15 April 2016 / 5:53 pm

Yep my surprise camera has ticked one off and we’ve visited a few new beaches today to make a start on another one :) Had the best day :)

      Stevie xx

  13. 15 April 2016 / 6:41 pm

*only* 33 haha! I’ll only have 4 years this year before the big four zero. Love your list :) My A to Z Y is my Yorkshire Pudding tips and tricks, so i’ll be sure to link up :) I make good ones hehe :-) #picknmix

    • 15 April 2016 / 9:34 pm

I have never tried to make them ha, I always mean to but wimp out and use Aunt Bessie’s ;)

What fun! 40 before I’m 40…may take a bit of thought. Well, for a start I’m going to be 40 a lot sooner than you so I’d better make them achieveable! Let’s see…learn jazz piano, that was a new years resolution from last year that never happened, so that should be on the list. Oh, and I’ve always wanted to visit the Pavillion in Brighton. Well that’s a start, only 38 to go…

  16. 16 April 2016 / 2:27 pm

great list Stevie, and all things that seem pretty achievable. Unfortunately I’m on the wrong side of 40, but I got a lot of things crossed off already

  17. 16 April 2016 / 10:26 pm

What a fab list – I might have to do one although I’ve only got 3.5 years to go eek! I really want to try paddle boarding too, it’s very popular where we live so no excuse really. Thanks for hosting #picknmix

    • 16 April 2016 / 11:31 pm

Loads of people seem to paddle board in Cornwall as well, but the sea is obviously freezing so I’ll have to work up my nerve ;) Good luck with your list if you do one :)

      Stevie x

  18. 17 April 2016 / 9:03 am

This is a great list Stevie and love the mixture of things that you have chosen. I have missed the boat with 40 at 40 (sob) so will have to do a 50 at 50 (even more sobs). Oh well at least I have will have 8 years to tick the things off. You should do a yearly update to see how you are getting on x

    • 17 April 2016 / 9:43 am

Thank you! 50 before 50 means you can add more fun thing to do though! :)

    17 April 2016 / 10:39 am

I will be 50 on Christmas Eve (although I feel – and am told I look- much younger) and now all I want is to be the best person I can be and see my beautiful children flourish. Any thing else is a bonus X Good luck to you with your list !

  20. 17 April 2016 / 11:50 am

i am 31 and I have never done one of these list before, but think I am going to do one. You have some great things on your list, But have you never really built a snowman?

    • 17 April 2016 / 5:03 pm

Ha no I have built a snowman, I just meant build another one as it snows so rarely down here in Cornwall we can go five years in between having enough snow for even a small snowman :) Good luck with your list if you do one :)

      Stevie x

  21. Jenny Mackie
    17 April 2016 / 7:21 pm

I love this list! I might make one but before I’m 30! A lot of the things you mention is on my bucket list of life! :)

  22. 17 April 2016 / 7:45 pm

Such a good list. I hope you manage to do each and every one. How hard is it to find a good hairdresser!?! #picknmix xx

    • 17 April 2016 / 9:46 pm

I struggle to find one I trust sadly as a few have either dyed my forehead or done completely different than I’ve asked…. I’m currently cutting it myself lol!

      Stevie xx

  23. Sarah Admissions of a Working Mother
    19 April 2016 / 12:26 pm

Happy birthday! Hope you had a good one! This is a great list! Eat a macaron? I so want to visit Harry Potter world, my sister has been and it looks great #picknmix

  24. 19 April 2016 / 2:28 pm

What a great list! How have you managed to not swim in the sea in Cornwall?? I don’t think I have ever had a macaroon either. I hope you manage to do them all hun xx

    • 19 April 2016 / 6:50 pm

Ha I have been swimming in the Cornish sea just not for a lot of years as I’m a wimp for the cold, plus for a lot of years I had the boys and no-one to watch my valuables whilst I swam ;)

      Stevie xx

  25. 19 April 2016 / 7:29 pm

What a fun list – I love the feed a penguin one! I never knew you wore glasses. We took a helicopter ride once & I loved it although they can be dangerous things. #picknmix x

    • 19 April 2016 / 7:55 pm

I wear them all the time now, my geek specs which I actually love really. I never have them on in photos solely because they’re so awkward when they reflect light at the wrong times! I would love the freedom of contact lenses though :)

      Stevie x

  26. 20 April 2016 / 10:11 am

I think you need to add going to a festival to your list. I saw your comment on my blog and I can’t believe that you have never been to one! There are some really great day festivals out there. It would certainly cross off number 7 “seeing someone live”!! You would probably see 5 or 6 bands in a day. Check out The Big Feastival as family orientated and activities for kids of all ages.

  27. 24 April 2016 / 4:26 pm

Brilliant idea! I wish I had thought of this. No way I would fit in forty things in 10 months!! We are however saving to go back to Nepal again.
Good luck with this challenge! I look forward to seeing some of your photos with your new camera.

    • 3 May 2016 / 1:39 pm

You could always do a 45 before 45? Gives you plenty of time then :)

      Stevie x

  28. 25 April 2016 / 8:53 pm

What an amazing list Stevie! I’m with you on the Northern Lights. My ‘bucket list’ would include visiting New York and Iceland and also becoming a reiki master :) Thanks for hosting #picknmix

  29. 1 May 2016 / 7:59 am

What a fantastic list! I must admit that it’s not something that I have ever thought of doing and I am MUCH closer to 40 than you! Ha! I can help you with the Yorkshire pudding one – I have a foolproof recipe on my blog that you should try :-)

  30. 4 May 2016 / 8:35 pm

Really enjoyed this! I have a significant birthday this year (30) so setting out a To Do list for the following big birthday seems like a fab plan. Don’t put off getting contact lenses, have had them since age 13 and you won’t regret it!

  31. 7 May 2016 / 9:12 am

Great list. I only have 11 months to go to the big 4-0 so I need to get cracking. I would also like to bake a decent cake and put make up on properly. The simple things in life eh? You’d think I’d have learned this stuff by now.
