Forty Before 40

Tomorrow I turn 33 and I have no issue with getting older at all, obviously it is better than the alternative for a start. For a bit of fun though I am going to do what I have seen others do online and set myself a 40 before Forty challenge.

Since I will have seven years to try and complete my list, I can choose ones that will take a fair bit of saving up for and/or hope to win the lottery for in the mean time ;) Anyway here goes my very long list of adventures and challenges for myself over the next seven years.

40 Before Forty

See the Northern Lights

Visit America and/or Canada – done! We were lucky enough to get to go to Universal Orlando Resort in 2017 in the USA!

Bake a cake that isn’t a disaster

Raise over £1000 for JDRF

Visit Scotland

Have a 100% finished house

See a famous band or singer live

Sleep in a hotel right by the beach, so I can see the sea from bed – done, we stayed at The Land’s End Hotel down here in Cornwall in 2017.

Be my ‘ideal’ weight even if only for a week

Own a pair of ankle boots which aren’t loud when walking or flat – done, I have a favourite pair that I pretty much live in.

Spend a Christmas in a cosy cottage with an open fire

Give blood

Take a ride in a helicopter

Find a hairdresser I trust and will visit more than once, who won’t dye my forehead

Go on a cruise

Swim in the sea in Cornwall again, I haven’t for years.

Go on a whale spotting boat trip – Done with Red Letter Days even if we didn’t see a lot it was still fun!

Sleep in a castle

Visit Wales

Visit all the main big beaches in Cornwall that I haven’t been to yet

Have a spa day

Visit Harry Potter World before the boys grow out of it – Done! We loved visiting Warner Studios!

Own a decent SLR camera –  Done, my lovely boyfriend and the boys bought me a Nikon D3300 for my birthday.

Eat a macaron, random but I’ve never tried one ha – Done, I tried one when we visited Universal Studios in the USA.

Stay in a yurt

Run for longer than 20 minutes in one go – Done just before I had to sell my treadmill.

Learn to put make-up on properly

Try abseiling

Walk to the top of Brown Willy – Done in 2018 – it almost killed me I was that unfit, so I want to try ti again without needing to sit down part way up!

Sleep in a tree-house or a cosy wooden lodge

Walk all of the South-West coast path (not in one go)

Make my own yorkshire puddings successfully

Drive a Tractor – Simon’s Dad is restoring an old one, I suspect he’ll be hiding the keys if he reads this.

Own a white Audi

Build a snowman again, we get snow very rarely down here – Done in 2018

Try paddleboarding

Visit St Nectan’s Glen

Take a photograph of a perfect sunset at Land’s End

Feed a penguin

Get contact lenses – Done! I don’t wear contacts all the time, but it is nice to now have the option to.

In case you think I’ve gone mad, Brown Willy is a hill that is the highest point in Cornwall! Contact lenses I would love as I have had to wear glasses all of the time for around a year now and I am so fed up of them needing cleaning and getting covered in rain.

Building a snowman would be great for the boys as we very rarely get snow in our part of Cornwall so they haven’t built a proper one since they were around three and four. The macaron bit is because I always see photos of them online and hear people talk about them, but weirdly I have never gotten around to trying one.

I would have put skydiving on my list, but I’ve done it before and absolutely loved every second of it. Now that I have children though I don’t take as many risks as I did before I had them all those years ago.

I’ll keep updating this list as and when I complete things on it, obviously some will be easy but some will take a lot of saving for!

What would be on your forty before 40 or fifty before 50 etc list? You can also check out my Bucket List.

You could do a few in one go, walk the southwest coast, raise money for your charity and stay in hotels right on the beach and visit the beaches.

    :) awesome post lovely

  • Helen

What a fantastic list of things to achieve! I’d also love to see the Northern Lights :) #picknmix

  • laura dove

Happy Birthday! I started a 40 before 40 list recently (I only have 4 years to go!!) and I still haven’t achieved a single one of them! I love your list and I hope that you achieve all of these things! Good Luck! #picknmix

Baaahahah I love this, a lot of these you could combine, like staying in a yurt in Wales (I follow a company that do just this, I’ll send you the link!) But I love the choices you have made. Sleeping seems to figure a lot. A woman after my own heart Before I had Oscar one of mine was to live and work in another country (and I don’t think Wales really counted). But now that might have to change. Oh and ps macaroons are over rated in my experience.

Am I too late to start s list?! I’m 38 this year! I reckon you could knock off some of these quite soon Stevie! Sky diving will not be on my list EVER!! Good for you doing that already! I would love to go skiing again and return to the Maldives but probably not achievable in the next two years! X

  • Kirsty

One of my key ones is to own a chanel 2.55 bag and to stay in the Plaza Hotel in New York just off Central Park….I think hubby and I will have to work extra hard for either of those things to happen! Happy birthday, have a lovely one! #picknmix

  • Mimiroseandme

What a lovely post and a very big list. I am sure you will soon ticked then off your list! Thank you for hosting this week! #PickNMix

  • Midgie

Fab list & Happy Birthday!!! I really need to make one and get on with ticking things off it! Have a go at the macarons but make them, they are really satifying when you get it right!

  • Plutonium Sox

Great list and a few you’ll be able to tick off pretty quickly too I think… In fact, hasn’t one already been done thanks to your birthday present?? What a great start!

*only* 33 haha! I’ll only have 4 years this year before the big four zero. Love your list :) My A to Z Y is my Yorkshire Pudding tips and tricks, so i’ll be sure to link up :) I make good ones hehe :-) #picknmix

  • Stevie - A Cornish Mum

Definitely not too late to do one :) Just make sure you choose things you won’t need to save up for for lots of years ;) I did a sky dive for a children’s cancer charity and it was absolutely amazing, one of the best experiences of my life and I’m not a fan of going up ladders even ha!

  • Stevie - A Cornish Mum

Ha I do love sleep ;) it’s mostly our love of staycations and holidays in general! Definitely combining some of them, I was thinking the abseiling (gulp) could be sponsored for JDRF at some point too. I had a new SLR camera for my birthday so that’s one ticked off today already ;)

What fun! 40 before I’m 40…may take a bit of thought. Well, for a start I’m going to be 40 a lot sooner than you so I’d better make them achieveable! Let’s see…learn jazz piano, that was a new years resolution from last year that never happened, so that should be on the list. Oh, and I’ve always wanted to visit the Pavillion in Brighton. Well that’s a start, only 38 to go…

  • Tracey Williams

This is a great list Stevie and love the mixture of things that you have chosen. I have missed the boat with 40 at 40 (sob) so will have to do a 50 at 50 (even more sobs). Oh well at least I have will have 8 years to tick the things off. You should do a yearly update to see how you are getting on x

  • Sue Wenham

I will be 50 on Christmas Eve (although I feel – and am told I look- much younger) and now all I want is to be the best person I can be and see my beautiful children flourish. Any thing else is a bonus X Good luck to you with your list !

  • Natasha Mairs

i am 31 and I have never done one of these list before, but think I am going to do one. You have some great things on your list, But have you never really built a snowman?

  • Stevie - A Cornish Mum

Ha no I have built a snowman, I just meant build another one as it snows so rarely down here in Cornwall we can go five years in between having enough snow for even a small snowman :) Good luck with your list if you do one :)

  • Jenny Mackie

I love this list! I might make one but before I’m 30! A lot of the things you mention is on my bucket list of life! :)

  • Sarah Admissions of a Working Mother

Happy birthday! Hope you had a good one! This is a great list! Eat a macaron? I so want to visit Harry Potter world, my sister has been and it looks great #picknmix

  • mummyandmonkeys

What a great list! How have you managed to not swim in the sea in Cornwall?? I don’t think I have ever had a macaroon either. I hope you manage to do them all hun xx

  • Stevie - A Cornish Mum

Ha I have been swimming in the Cornish sea just not for a lot of years as I’m a wimp for the cold, plus for a lot of years I had the boys and no-one to watch my valuables whilst I swam ;)

    Stevie xx

  • Becky, Cuddle Fairy

What a fun list – I love the feed a penguin one! I never knew you wore glasses. We took a helicopter ride once & I loved it although they can be dangerous things. #picknmix x

  • Stevie - A Cornish Mum

I wear them all the time now, my geek specs which I actually love really. I never have them on in photos solely because they’re so awkward when they reflect light at the wrong times! I would love the freedom of contact lenses though :)

    Stevie x

  • Alex

I think you need to add going to a festival to your list. I saw your comment on my blog and I can’t believe that you have never been to one! There are some really great day festivals out there. It would certainly cross off number 7 “seeing someone live”!! You would probably see 5 or 6 bands in a day. Check out The Big Feastival as family orientated and activities for kids of all ages.

  • Melanie Chadd

Brilliant idea! I wish I had thought of this. No way I would fit in forty things in 10 months!! We are however saving to go back to Nepal again.
Good luck with this challenge! I look forward to seeing some of your photos with your new camera.

  • Carol Cameleon

What an amazing list Stevie! I’m with you on the Northern Lights. My ‘bucket list’ would include visiting New York and Iceland and also becoming a reiki master :) Thanks for hosting #picknmix

  • (Mostly) Yummy Mummy

What a fantastic list! I must admit that it’s not something that I have ever thought of doing and I am MUCH closer to 40 than you! Ha! I can help you with the Yorkshire pudding one – I have a foolproof recipe on my blog that you should try :-)

  • @TiredHappyPuke

Really enjoyed this! I have a significant birthday this year (30) so setting out a To Do list for the following big birthday seems like a fab plan. Don’t put off getting contact lenses, have had them since age 13 and you won’t regret it!

  • Breakfastclubmum

Great list. I only have 11 months to go to the big 4-0 so I need to get cracking. I would also like to bake a decent cake and put make up on properly. The simple things in life eh? You’d think I’d have learned this stuff by now.
