A little while ago I realised that I was making no headway with my weight loss… in fact it had turned again in to weight gain, so I contacted Slimming World and asked them to help me.
I have written posts before about trying to lose weight, such as 47 reasons which I actually wrote in August last year. In that time I have lost weight… and then gained it all back plus some. This is where I could insert lots of excuses about why I put weight back on and why it wasn’t my fault.
However I am honest (to a fault at times) and the entire truth of it all is that I lacked the willpower and I gave in too easily. Things came to a head though in recent weeks, where I realised that rather than having 47 items of clothing to try to get back in to, I actually had hardly any left that I could wear. Unless of course bulging buttons and split seams are suddenly fashionable – you never know skirts over trousers were a bit thing in the nineties…
I was wearing the same clothes all the time and feeling dowdy and podgy. I’ve not taken the boys swimming in a long time as I’ve become so self-conscious…. plus my bikini top no longer fits me without being pretty obscene.
Things couldn’t carry on the way that they were, it was unfair to the boys that my insecurities were meaning they couldn’t do an activity that they love and that we’ve always enjoyed doing together. It was also unfair to Si to have to put up with me being grumpy about my weight, tired as the junk I was eating wasn’t giving me the energy to get through the day and generally a miserable pain in the (rather large) bum.
I have heard great things about Slimming World online from friends and everyone seems to know a friend who did amazingly well on it, so I thought I would give it a go. I knew I needed something with a plan to follow, as winging it really hadn’t worked for me so far.
For anyone who hasn’t really heard of Slimming World (there must be one or two somewhere) with Slimming World without getting in to the technicalities too much, you have free foods that you can eat as much of as you like, some foods which you should limit to a certain portion size and your syns. Syns are the treats that you fancy eating, you have a syn guideline each day which stops you from eating too much of the slightly more naughty foods.
The theory is that no food is really off-limits, you can have a bit of what you fancy. I liked the idea of no food being banned, as this was part of my issue with previous diets… I always ended up giving in and binge eating which ever food was banned.
I came up with a plan that instead of paying to register for Slimming World online, I would pitch to them the idea of a ‘free’ membership in return for write ups like this rather long-winded one. I’d like to point out here that I pitched so that I would have the added encouragement to keep my willpower as I’d feel I was letting them down as well as myself – I know myself too well, not because I am too ‘tight’ to pay for things. I’m frugal not tight…
Amazingly the lovely people at Slimming World said yes and this week I have been learning a whole new language of Syns and healthy extras.
Last Tuesday when I weighed on the day of my first Slimming World day, I was 10 stone 6 lbs – before you tut and ask why I would want to lose weight as that’s not heavy, I am really short at 5 foot 2 tall and therefore classed as overweight until I touch on 9 stone 13 lbs. My aim though is for somewhere in between 8 and a half stone and 9 stone as this is in the middle of my healthy weight range according to my bmi.
Yes I know bmi is really outdated, but it gives me a rough guideline and I felt at my best in the past being in between the two weights I’ve mentioned above.
After 1 week of Slimming World I am now 10 stone 2 lbs, a loss of 4 lbs in a week! I’m surprised the difference that 4 lbs has made to how well I can actually now breath in my jeans and just in general how I feel in myself.
I am actually amazed at how well my week has gone, it was a mixed effort of using my TomTom GPS watch to get myself moving more and back to running, and following the Slimming World guidelines.
Other than one evening when I’d used up all my syns and everyone else decided to have a takeaway and I may have gotten a little embarrassingly emotional as I fought with my willpower (cringe yes I know…. I am ashamed and at least the willpower won!), it has been easy.
I can eat so many foods for ‘free’, that really there is no reason to be hungry and my skin is really benefitting from all the extra fruit and veg I’ve been chomping on. Other free foods include potatoes and a lot of meats (and loads of other foods), so I have been loving potatoes this week.
I’ll write a bit more about some of my Slimming World favourite meals after I have been at this for a bit longer, and after I have tried out some of the recipes on the Slimming World site. I’m really not feeling deprived though, the trick I have found so far is to make the most of your allowances and eat filling foods, ones that will keep you going for longer without cravings for naughty foods.
I haven’t touched chocolate for a week, not because I can’t as I could easily use it as my syns, but because I haven’t felt like I’ve needed it and I’d prefer to use my syns on something more filling. Usually I eat a lot of chocolate, but I think the extra fruit is keeping my sweet tooth happy enough.
I also feel like I am naturally making healthier choices now, without having to think about it. My first day with Slimming World I was a bit lost trying to work out what I should be eating, but this was only because I have a bad habit of trying to work things out myself instead of reading instructions.
On the Slimming World website, there are handy tools for checking how many syns are in things, sheets to print with the free foods clearly listed on and so much more information including some great looking recipes. There is even an app for my phone, that has made things a lot easier since I downloaded it.
I have found that as the week went on, I was having to check my sheets and app less as I was remembering the information easily myself.
As recommended by Slimming World, I am also keeping a food diary and considering how much food is on there I am amazed how much weight I have lost already. This week my aim is to get below 10 stone for the first time in ages, which means I need to lose more than 2 lbs….. wish me luck!
Basically this was a very long-winded post to say I want to lose weight, I’ve lost 4 lbs so far and thank you Slimming World…
*I was given a free 3 month membership of Slimming World online, but only as I requested it and all my thoughts and opinions as ever are my own and honest*
